| To kick off my Summer right, I headed to downtown LA for Futurehouse 10. I remember saying to my friend, "Yeah, we won't be home too late." Boy, did I wish I had my sunglasses when we rolled out at about 7am! The thing about Futurehouse was that it got good at about 2am.
The event took place at LA's historic Grand Avenue. There were three rooms of music. Though having more than one option for music was nice, unless you were in the small basement room, it never quite felt full enough. If you love to dance like me, this is never a problem though. Decorations were also a bit sparse and at about midnight, The Rebirth, a soulful trip hop band performed. I could appreciate their music but putting them on in the main room in the midst of a bunch of funky house DJs was a mistake. The room cleared out, not because they weren't talented but it was just bad timing. Building a vibe is important at a party. They should have been on earlier. At about this point, I thought it was still gonna be an early night.
I traveled downstairs for a surprisingly funky tech house set by KCRW's Liza Richardson. I had heard her on her weekly radio show which can be very eclectic. She filled the basement and played a solid set. The crowd was even congratulating her as she got off. There's nothing I love more than a crowd that really appreciates good music.
After chilling for a bit, I returned to the main room for Q-Burns Abstract Message. He threw down beats so funky that leaving was not an option. Plus, he is so fun to watch behind the decks. He looks like an awkward nerdy boy who's finally being let loose behind the decks, playing some of the sickest tunes around. You know it's a good set when the total stranger next you looks at you and starts talking about how amazing the music is! From here on out, I felt like I was seeing some of the best DJ sets ever.
Other highlights of the night were SF based Garth of Wicked Crew, Futurehouse’s leading lady Lillyanne and the London based Idjut Boys. I hadn't heard of them before. If you haven't, go search them out right now! I'm serious! Do it now! I wanted to know the name of every track. My feet hurt. I should have been falling over from exhaustion but their music kept me shaking my booty!
The party went off with no drama. The security was nice. It was quick and efficient trying to get in. Everyone was in good spirits and people are still talking about it. I'm glad I stayed up late and stuck it out.
