| To celebrate 10 years of San Francisco based Om Records, this three-disc set does exactly what Om does best. It delivers what I like to call “Cocktail Music.” It's perfect for sipping on your cocktail and bopping your head to, whether it's in a darkened club in New York or at poolside in Miami. It's great, sexy, mood music, signature Om featuring all their most well known artists.
Disc 01 : a contemporary house mix courtesy of DJ Fluid, is full of warm vocal sounds from Om favs like Colette, Marques Wyatt, Kaskade and Rithma. Uneaq's catchy tune "Only U" makes its second appearance on an Om mix this year. Chuck Love's "Soul Symphony” stands out as a house classic in the making. It never quite gets the listener to the point where you feel like jumping out of your seat and dancing, though, but is enjoyable none-the-less.
Disc 02 : an unmixed downtempo collection full of ambient and hip-hop inspired grooves. Kaskade's "Yeah Right" kicks it off but is a bit too adult contemporary jazz for my tastes. Thankfully, Mark Farina's "Cali Spaces" automatically picks things up and turns it around. This is the stand out of the three discs, in my opinion. With each listen, a new song gets stuck in my head. I've caught myself crooning JT Donaldson's "Trust Me" in the shower on more than one occasion. Rithma's textured and layered "Still Waiting" epitomizes the best of Om.
The 3rd and final disc : a compilation of Om's greatest hits. Though a bit all over the place, this disc, more than once, brought a smile to my face. I could remember the first time I heard some of these songs. Blue Boy's "Remember Me" reminded me of a time before I even knew what electronic music was. Johnny Fiasco's "Take 5," Andy Caldwell's "I Can't Wait" and Mark Farina's "Dream Machine" are just a few of these true soulful anthems that appear on the disc.
For and Om fan, this is a must have. And, if you are planning on having a cocktail party anytime soon, I recommend picking this one up immediately!
